Megan Garfield and Michael Mason were just as surprised as anyone to find that their fifth-grade friendship would lead to everlasting love. They transitioned from friends to boyfriend and girlfriend nine years after their first encounter, just as they headed out in separate directions to college — Megan to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Michael to Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee. They fought the distance for four years until making their way back to Nashville. Their love story, which began in 2000, continued to develop before eventually taking a turn towards forever.

Friends since fifth grade, Megan and Michael’s friendship turned into something more! This happy couple said “I do” at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works.

Starting in 2000, Megan and Michael’s love story has continued through the years. Fifteen years after their first meeting, they became husband and wife.

In May of 2014, Megan was greeted at her apartment by an unlocked door, lights on, music playing and an aisle of red rose petals. “I was very confused because I knew I had locked the door, turned the lights off, didn’t leave music on and definitely didn’t have rose petals on my floor before I left for work that morning,” Megan remembers. As any romantic would, Megan followed the rose petals and was overjoyed to see Michael, donning a suit, standing among the petals as he shared his desire to spend forever with Megan. “It took me by complete surprise … he had put so much thought into it, and I was just in awe,” she shares.

Following the engagement, Megan and Michael began to plan their wedding. Set on the idea of hosting the ceremony and reception in the same location, Megan and Michael were sold on Marathon Music Works. A multi-purpose space that opened its doors in Marathon Village in 2001, this renovated warehouse fit the bill for the couple’s needs and wants. Practical features, including parking in the back of the building, bar stations, ample space and opportunity to decorate how they wanted, combined with the “M” painted on the wall — “ironic, because both our names start with ‘M’ and our last name is Mason,” Megan shares — made this the ideal venue for their June wedding.

Thirteen months after Michael popped the question, the soon-to-be newlyweds were joined by more than 200 guests as they exchanged vows and wedding bands under the glow of a chandelier in Marathon Music Works.

Megan loved her Olia Zavozina dress. She altered it to fit her style by adding a longer train and adjusting the neckline. She loves the pearls that run down the back of the dress. Her dress was her “something new;” her mother’s veil, her “something old;” a handkerchief from a family friend, her” something borrowed;” and her garter, “something blue.”

Marathon Music Works was transformed into an elegant setting for the pair’s big day. With thoughtful fabrics and a soft color palette, the space was romantic and welcoming.

Flower arrangements and two rows of petals livened the space for the couple’s nuptials. Megan looked radiant as she walked down the aisle and the couple was overjoyed as they recessed as husband and wife.
